Hey guys, gays, and gworls! I’m back at it like a crack addict with a spotlight on one of my fave people that I was stanning in my previous post. I would like to present to you Terry Torrington!
GeekedT: Hello Terry, how are you?
Terry: I am splendid, fed and blessed.
GeekedT: So, tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from?
Terry: I was born in Brooklyn, NY First generation American, my parents just moved to the states from Guyana with little ole me in the belly ready to take on a new life. I spent the first four years of my life a bit spoiled until I found out my sister was being born…. While also meeting my two older brothers who I had no idea existed.
GeekedT: What was your first piece of work that you’ve put out to the world, and in what way did it impact you?
Terry: My first artistic love is music. At 14/15 I started DJ’ing which eventually transitioned into beatmaking. I truly wanted to be a solo artist but I felt like my sexuality would be scrutinized heavily so I went into production. The first piece of work I put out was a remix I did to Alicia Keys “You Don’t Know My Name”. I sampled the beat from Teddy Pendergrass “Close the door” and made my own beat with her vocals. I put it up on Myspace and it took on a life of its own between friends and family. I can’t say it impacted me in any way, I was just having fun experimenting.
GeekedT: Some of the most recent fans recognize you for your work in the web series Love at First Night. Can you tell us about what brought on these ideas?
Terry: It had been close to 3 years since Sean and I created a project. We left No Shade on a high note but it also left Sean Torrington (No Shade creator) a little defeated in continuing. I wanted to continue acting, I loved playing Eric and being able to tell our own stories. I was at work one night watching Survivor’s Remorse and I fell in love with it immediately. It was a breath of fresh air for a black comedy/drama. I thought to myself, why isn’t there any black, queer shows like this? Then spirit hit me like, bitch because you didn’t make it yet. Other things came up for me in the process of creating it, I wanted to mirror my relationship at the time. There was ZERO representation of a happy, melanated SGL relationships. Although I am not against interacial relationships I just grew tired of that being the narrative on TV so then my mission became, black queer love. The rest is history lol.
GeekedT: Speaking of Love at First Night, it’s on its third season! First, congrats! Secondly, the writing on this show is great. Lastly, I would like to ask if you have seen this show reaching a third season?
Terry: Thank You so much for that, it means a lot to me because at no point had I thought I’d be a filmmaker. I missed a whole decade of TV so I’m gagging that this is my life right now. It varied, at first I thought I was gonna have a Issa Rae glo up after season 1. Even typing this out I have to laugh, so young, so naive. I just kind of went with the flow, after taking a year off I came to the conclusion that 3 Seasons would be perfect for this story. Anything beyond that would be dragging it out.
GeekedT: Any other projects coming soon that you would like to announce or is that top-secret right now?
Terry: I am taking a break on leading any projects after Love @ First Night. I am however co creating with a few other artists. One project I am super excited about is a sketch comedy special coming to SLAY. That’s all I can really say right now.
GeekedT: Tell us where the people can follow you on and where can they catch Love at First Night?
Terry: I’m active on IG and Twitter both handles are @terrytorro, you can also follow @slaytv and @lafnwebseries. Love @ First Night is streaming exclusively on our SLAY TV app, you can download for IOS, Android or Roku and watch for free.
Be sure to follow Terry on his socials to keep up with the work he’s doing along with any of his upcoming projects. You won’t regret it! Also, be sure to comment, like, and subscribe to the blog for more content and more updates!
