Happy Black History Month to my fellow black guys, gays, and gworls! I’m back at it like a crack addict to spotlight a favorite black hero of mine this month! Today, I’ll be giving you the rundown of WHO is the Batwing!
So before I get started on telling you who Batwing is, I’ll first have to let you know that there are two different Batwings.
The first Batwing appeared in Batman Incorporated Issue #5 when Batman decided to search for bat-minded individuals across the globe to join Batman Incorporated, a company where bat-like heroes join to protect people worldwide instead of just in Gotham. You had David Zavimbe who was raised to take on a task like this and you also had Luke Fox, son of Lucius Fox. Although Luke had gone to great lengths to gain the interest of Batman, Batman ultimately chose David over Luke based on his sheer skill, combat knowledge, and power. David held the mantle of Batwing for a few issues before he ultimately retired from being the Batwing. That’s when Luke was able to take over the name of Batwing and take on the role of a hero.
Luke Fox has been around for a while now. Not only is he a black superhero but he’s also the owner of the company “Foxtech”, the company that he himself created! Luke also makes it a mission to watch over the Batcave on occasions. Yeah, he was a part of Batman Incorporated and is now running tech support for the bat family, but he’s also considered to be a part of the bat family too. That’s a big (sort of but not really) milestone for a character who wasn’t even picked first (even though he was Bruce’s first choice in his head). At one point him and Barbara Gordan (Batgirl) were in a crime-fighting relationship together before DC Rebirth.
If you want to know more about David as Batwing, be sure to check out his 2011 run that’s available on ComiXology and the DC Universe App. Same thing for Luke Fox. Stay tuned next Tuesday for my second black superhero intro!
