Highlighting Black Heroes

Highlighting Black Heroes – Monica Rambeau

Hey guys, gays, and gworls! I’m back at it like a crack addict, and I’m here because I think it’s time that we give our good NOLA sister credit where it’s due! Let me introduce y’all to the queen of many names, the first female captain, and the Golden Avenger by the name of Monica Rambeau!

Monica Rambeau first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 (1982). Monica was a lieutenant in New Orleans harbor patrol who tried to prevent a dangerous weapon that would cause their world and another world to collide. In doing so, she gained her powers. Her powers also became her biggest problem when she became a walking bomb. She sought out after Mister Fantastic to solve the issue. Since Mister Fantastic was gone on a mission and Spider-Man knocked her out, Iron Man was tasked with circuiting her energy into his gauntlets and shoot it in the air Tron style. Ever since miss Monica became a part of the Avengers roster and built herself from there. She’s been a member of the Avengers, the Mighty Avengers, and NextWave: Agents of H.A.T.E., the Ultimates, and many more. A fun fact; John Romita wanted to model Monica Rambeau after THE Pam Grier! Now that we’ve covered her powers let’s divulge into her power set.

Monica Rambeau can change into any form of light or energy that’s a part of the electromagnetic spectrum. She can also absorb new forms of light or energy. Meaning she can absorb light, gamma radiation, UV light, etc. She can also use that same power as energy projectiles. Sis is a walking battery. Along with those abilities, she can fly at the speed of light or at whatever speed of the energy she’s absorbed. There was a point in Secret Wars (2015) where she had the ability to destroy the other Earth but chose not to. Monica is a big deal around these parts of town. The only drawback about her powers is that she can only harness one type of energy at a time and she can be forced to revert to her human form. The thing about her only being able to control one form of energy at a time is barely a weakness because homegirl can switch in less than a second.

It’s crazy to think that Monica has had many name changes but hey, rebranding yourself works miracles. She WAS the first female Captain Marvel until Genis-Vell wanted the name back from her, so she became Photon. Genis couldn’t make up his mind and wanted to be Photon, so sis changed her name to Pulsar. The latest rebrand (which I think is her best) is when she changed her name to Spectrum. Monica serves with dreads and a good cut! The costume is CUTE!
